How Trading Marriott Weeks With Interval International Works

Those who have week-based Marriott Vacation Club ownerships may wish to have the option of traveling to other resorts outside the vast network of Marriott Vacation Club resorts. Owners of Marriott Vacation Club are able to use Interval International (II) in order to trade for Marriott resorts outside of the resort they are deeded to, as well as within other timeshare vacation clubs that II is affiliated with. For those wondering how trading Marriott weeks with Interval International works, this article will tell you everything you won’t find on the Marriott Vacation Club website, but need to know.

How Does Interval International Work

Depositing Your Marriott Week

Deposit Your Week For Preferred Points

Members of both Marriott Vacation Club and Interval International will be able to deposit their week, and in return Interval International will allot the members Preferred Points that can be used within II’s exchange network. These Preferred Points are then able to be used to book another resort that Interval International has in its inventory, providing even more flexibility for vacationers.

The amount of Preferred Points that members will receive is determined by multiple factors. These include:

  • Weekly demand, which is based off of the Travel Demand Index, for the deposited accommodations
  • Whether or not the resort is classified as Premier or Select by Interval International
  • Unit Attributes, things such as size or the presence of a kitchen, laundry facilities, complimentary wi fi, etc.
  • Amount of time before check-in for your deeded week or season, the earlier (farther away from check-in) the week is deposited to Interval International, the more points you will receive

Travel Demand Index

The Travel Demand Index, also known as the TDI, provides Marriott Vacation Club members with the converted point values from their exchange deposit. These points will go into the Preferred Points member account and then will be able to be used to book resorts in the Interval International system. You can review the Interval International Resort Directory that provides access to the Travel Demand Index for each resort to get a feel for the projected availability vs. demand for that particular region. We’ve added a sample chart of the Orlando and New York regions below so you can get a feel for how to read the chart.

As you can see in the charts above, the numbers of each week in the year are listed from the top down, and the Travel Demand Index is listed from left to right. Keep in mind, there are different charts for each region, and the Travel Demand Index number can be different from year to year.

How Many Preferred Points Will Interval International Give Me For My Marriott Week?

Take a look at the chart below. You’ll notice that the higher the number on the Travel Demand Index, the more Preferred Points members will need to have in order to make the reservation for Interval International resorts.

Some members may be wondering how long you have to make a reservation through Interval International once the deposit goes through. Interval International provides two years from the checkout date of the week that is deposited for an exchange. This is a great benefit for owners who would like to bank their vacation time with Interval International to extend the amount of time they have before being required to book a vacation.

How Many Preferred Points Does It Take To Book Another Resort With Interval International?

Just as Interval International will use the Travel Demand Index to determine how many points your deposit is worth, you can also use the Travel Demand Index to determine how many Preferred Points it will take to book resorts within Interval’s network.

Using the Travel Demand Index to find the cost of other resorts is a straight-forward affair. All you need to do is line up the unit size you want with the time of year you wish to travel and then you can see the associated points value needed for your vacation.

Owning Marriott and Using Interval International

Booking Through Interval International

Resort and a specific week’s availability is based on the deposits made by Interval International’s members, so there may be times that reservations at specific resorts are more limited. Members are able to make requests for weeks that are not currently available in order to be placed on a waiting list. This waiting list is first come first serve, so it is best to put in these requests early on in your vacation planning. When placing their request, members are able to select as many weeks, resorts, and locations as they would like. If the preferred week becomes available, Interval International will confirm the week and let the member know via email.

Marriott Vacation Club Priority Window

Those who own Marriott Vacation Club will also be granted a priority window. This allows owners to have the first look at the available Marriott resorts. When working with Interval International, Marriott owners will be given exclusive priority in week-based exchanges. This may depend on what Marriott property the owner deposited with Interval International as well as availability.

Those who do not own Marriott will have a better chance of booking Marriott properties in lower demand periods. In the low demand seasons any Interval International member may reserve a Marriott property. However, non-Marriott owners will not have the option of exchanging to a Marriott property during high-demand seasons, unless it is Flex-Time. Interval International’s Flex-Time begins 60 days before the check in date of your desired reservation. These Flex weeks come up usually due to an owner depositing late or a previously booked exchange that has been recently cancelled by an owner.

When Can You Travel

Depositing a week with Interval International is a great way to gain more flexibility in travel plans. Once the week is deposited, owners no longer need to travel on the week they were originally deeded. Depositing a Marriott property will also give owners the opportunity to travel during peak weeks at other vacation clubs due to their high trading power.

Marriott Trading Power

Owning a week at Marriott resort is one of the best ways to ensure you have a high trading power with Interval International. This is due to the fact that Marriott resorts are known to offer a high quality of accommodations and the locations Marriott has chosen for their resorts are usually in high demand, especially in peak seasons. Owners can also increase their chances for easy access to highly desirable exchanges by owning a premier rated resort with high TDI weeks as well as depositing weeks early to Interval International.

Due to the high demand of domestic and Marriott Vacation Club international resorts, Marriott owners can also receive a bonus Accommodation Certificate, also known as “AC”, for deposits that qualify. This bonus Accommodation Certificate can be used to book an extra week from Interval International’s vacation inventory and is valid for one year beginning the day of the deposit.
