The Westin Resort & Spa, Cancun Sold: What This Means for Owners

The Westin Resort & Spa, Cancun, a property known for its mix of hotel rooms and timeshare units, has been sold by Marriott Vacations Worldwide to Alojica and Royalton Hotels & Resorts. This sale marks a significant shift for the property, as it transitions into an All-Inclusive by Marriott Bonvoy resort under the Westin Hotels & Resorts brand.

For owners in the Vistana Signature Network (VSN) and Westin Aventuras program, this change raises questions about how their ownership and vacation options will be affected.

The sale of The Westin Resort & Spa, Cancun was announced back in January of 2026, but up until recently details of the acquisition have been cloudy at best, with more information trickling out as owners inquire with Marriott directly and attend annual owner’s meetings.

The resort, located in Punta Nizuc at the southern tip of Cancun’s Hotel Zone, features 372 rooms and suites, five restaurants and bars, and other amenities. Alojica and Royalton Hotels & Resorts plan to implement a capital improvement program to convert the property into an all-inclusive resort. However, the transition to an all-inclusive model will bring changes to the resort’s operations and offerings.

Impact on Vistana Signature Network Owners

For VSN owners who use StarOptions to book vacations at this property, the sale introduces uncertainty. Historically, the timeshare units at this resort were not fully integrated into the Aventuras trust, which means they may not be protected under the same ownership structure.

Per the general manager at the WLR (Westin Lagunamar Resort) annual owners meeting, there will be ~20 villas at Westin Cancun still after the conversion. There were ~44 villas before. The all inclusive will be an optional additional charge when staying there.

Additionally, a reduction of timeshare units from 44 to 20 as part of the resort’s transformation could limit availability for VSN owners. The introduction of an optional all-inclusive fee for timeshare guests adds another layer of decision for owners booking this resort, as it may change the cost structure for those who prefer to prepare their own meals or dine offsite.

Impact on Westin Aventuras Owners

Westin Resort & Spa Cancun Availability

Westin Aventuras owners, who use HomeOptions to book stays at this property, face similar challenges. While the resort has been a part of the Aventuras program, its future availability remains unclear. Owners have reported difficulty seeing availability for bookings beyond October 2026, raising concerns about how the property will remain accessible through the Aventuras system.

The transition to an all-inclusive model may also affect the overall experience for Aventuras owners, as the resort’s atmosphere and amenities shift to align with the all-inclusive concept.

Concerns Raised by Owners

Owners have expressed mixed reactions to the sale and planned changes. Some are concerned about the potential loss of flexibility and the impact of the all-inclusive model on the resort’s atmosphere. Others worry about the reduced number of timeshare units and the possibility of losing access to the property altogether.

The sale of The Westin Resort & Spa, Cancun to Alojica and Royalton Hotels & Resorts marks a significant change for the property and its timeshare owners. As the resort transitions to a new model, some Vistana Signature Network and Westin Aventuras owners may love the new all-inclusive model, while other owners may choose to shift their vacations to nearby resorts such as the Westin Lagunamar Resort for a more family-friendly vacation experience.
