Timeshare Points Versus Deeded Weeks

Timeshare Points Versus Deeded Weeks: Which Is Right For You?

If you are considering buying into a timeshare property, it is important to understand as much about your options as possible. One of the best things to educate yourself about are timeshare points versus deeded weeks so that you can decide which is right for you. There are some areas in which these types of timeshare ownership options overlap, and other ways that they are different. We will cover all of the most important information you need to know, so that you can make the best choice for your travel needs.

Deeded Weeks

For those who know when and where they wish to travel every year for their vacation, deeded weeks may be the right choice for you. There are a couple of different types of deeded weeks that offer varying levels of flexibility.

Fixed Weeks

Fixed weeks are deeded weeks that apply to only one specific resort location, unit size, and time of the year. When you purchase a fixed week, it is similar to purchasing a number in the year. For example, you may choose to purchase the second week of January, or week 2 out of 52 weeks, in Hawaii. Then you would travel every year on the second week of January to Hawaii. For those who enjoy the consistency in their vacation time, a fixed week purchase may be right for you.

Floating Weeks

For those that don’t want to be locked into a specific time of the year, you may wish to consider floating weeks. Floating weeks are a deeded week in one location, but unlike fixed weeks, owners will be able to pick from a range of dates based on a season. Marriott Legacy Weeks fall under this category. This option is great for those who enjoy traveling to the same place annually, but may want to have more options for when they travel.

Timeshare Points

If you wish to purchase timeshare points instead of deeded weeks, there are a couple of options to choose from. The following section will cover the differences and similarities of each type, and will provide some useful information on the amount of points you may want to purchase for your vacationing needs.

Pure Points

Pure points, also referred to as trust points, are not deeded whatsoever. Owners of pure points do not have a deed or a home resort, and instead are buying a fractional piece of the trust. This type of timeshare ownership provides owners the ability to book at any resort in that trust within their booking windows. An example of a pure point trust would be WorldMark or Marriott Destination Club.

Deeded Points-Based

Deeded points are a middle ground of deeded floating weeks and pure points. When buying into a deeded points-based timeshare, owners will receive a deed to a home resort of their choosing, but will still be able to use their points to book outside of their specific week, unit, and resort location. The two most popular examples of deeded points-based systems are Hilton Grand Vacation Club and Disney.

Each of the different properties within the Club’s collection of resorts will have a different level of desirability and value, and therefore cost varying amounts of points to reserve. The varying cost takes into account their location and the time of year you want to book. Below you can view an example of the number of points needed to make a reservation. Note that each specific unit size will cost a different amount of points, based on whether you’re booking a reservation in Platinum Season weeks or Gold Season weeks:
