Marriott Vacation Club Holding Accounts: Everything You Need To Know

Over the past few years, we all have seen how quickly plans can change. Sometimes flexibility is needed when plans change. Luckily Marriott Vacation Club members have an easy way to cancel or modify their reservations without losing their Vacation points, if they are canceled at least 1 day prior to their reserved check-in day.

If you are a current or prospective Marriott Vacation Club member, you will want to familiarize yourself with Marriott Vacation Club’s cancellation policy to prevent forfeiture of your Destinations Club points.

What Is A Holding Account?

Think of a Holding Account as a temporary “parking space” for Vacation Points from a Marriott Vacation Club reservation that was modified or canceled 60 days to 1 day prior to the reserved Check-In date.

Holding Account Restrictions

Vacation Points in your Holding Account will be valid to book another reservation with, until the end of your Use Year, after which they will expire. You can use them the same as normal Vacation Points, except that reservations using Vacation Points that are in a holding account must be made within 60 or fewer days before the new Check-In date. Also, you won’t be able to bank or borrow any vacation points that are kept in a Holding Account.

In the event of cancelling a reservation that is using banked or borrowed Vacation Points, the banked or borrowed points are not returned to their original Use Year. They will remain as banked or borrowed Vacation Points and stay in the Use Year of the canceled reservation.

Here is a summary of the usage restrictions of Vacation Points in a holding account. Vacation Points in a holding account:

  • cannot be banked, borrowed or transferred
  • cannot be exchanged for Bonvoy points
  • cannot be used for Active Explorer Golf Certificates or the Marriott Golf Academy
  • cannot be used to book airfare
  • must be used by the end of the Use Year or they expire

Although there are restrictions for points in a holding account, you can still use your vacation points to:

  • create a new reservation at Marriott Vacation Club Resorts during your current Use Year as long as the reservation is booked 60 or less days before the new Check-In date
  • perform an Internal Exchange that is 60 days in advance or less

When Are My Marriott Vacation Points Placed In A Holding Account?

In the event that you are canceling within a range of 60 to 1 days prior to your reserved check-in date, any points used for the reservation will be placed into a holding account. If you are modifying a reservation 60 to 1 days prior to your reserved check-in date, any points not used for the new reservation will be put into a holding account.

You can see the various cancellation / modification deadlines in the chart below:

How Do I Prevent My Vacation Points Being Placed In A Holding Account?

To avoid any of your Vacation Points being put into a holding account, simply cancel or modify your reservation 61 or more days prior to the check-in date. For a cancellation, all of the Vacation Points used for the cancelled reservation are returned to your account and can be used without any future restrictions. For a modification, any points not used for the new reservation are returned to your account and can be used without any future restrictions.

Can I Transfer Vacation Points In My Holding Account?

No, vacation points can be transferred from one Marriott Vacation Club account to another if the points are in a Holding Account.
